The Subterranean Ruins of Bulla Regia and Coastal Dreams: A 4-Day Road Trip through Northwest Tunisia

When people think of Tunisia, they often picture the sprawling sands of the Sahara or the blue-and-white charm of Sidi Bou Saïd. But if you head northwest toward the "Coral Coast," you’ll find a landscape that feels more like the Italian Riviera or the Swiss Alps than the North African desert.

For this long weekend, we’re trading the bustling medina of Tunis for the underground wonders of Bulla Regia and the pine-covered cliffs of Tabarka. Buckle up—this is the ultimate 4-day Friday-to-Monday road trip.

When to Go: The Spring Advantage

While I’ve visited this region in September, let me tell you: Late Spring (late April to early June) is the absolute best time to go.

When I went in September, the temperatures were still quite high, and the landscape had lost some of its luster after the long summer. In the spring, the weather is significantly cooler—usually between 70°F and 78°F—which makes exploring the ruins much more enjoyable. Plus, the views are incomparable; the hills are carpeted in vibrant green grass and dotted with wildflowers, a stark and beautiful contrast to the ancient stone ruins.

Avoid Summer at all costs—temperatures inland near Bulla Regia can easily spike over 105°F, making the ruins feel like an oven.

Day 1: Friday – Descending into Bulla Regia

The Drive: Tunis to Bulla Regia (Approx. 100 miles / 2.5 hours)

Pick up your rental car in Tunis early Friday morning. As you head west, the cityscape melts into the lush, rolling wheat fields of the Jendouba governorate.

The Site: Bulla Regia Bulla Regia is unique because the Roman elite here built their villas underground to escape the summer heat. This subterranean design created a time capsule; because these rooms were buried, the mosaics were never exposed to the elements. Unlike many other sites where the sun and rain have faded the art, the colors here are startlingly vivid, preserved for centuries beneath the earth.

  • The House of Amphitrite: The crown jewel. The mosaic of Amphitrite surrounded by sea creatures looks as if it were laid yesterday.

  • The House of the Hunt: A massive villa with an underground courtyard that shows the architectural genius of the era.

  • The House of the Fisherman: Named for its marine-themed mosaics.

  • The House of the Peacock & House of Treasures: These smaller villas offer some of the most intricate geometric patterns.

  • Above-Ground Beauty: Don't just stay in the "basements." Walking the site above ground is stunning, especially in the spring. You’ll find the Temple of Apollo, the Forum, and a remarkably intact Roman Theater. The views looking out across the valley from the ruins are some of the most peaceful in the country.

Day 2 & 3: Saturday & Sunday – Luxury and Legends in Tabarka

Where to Stay: La Cigale Tabarka Hôtel After exploring the ruins, drive 90 minutes north to Tabarka. La Cigale is the height of luxury in Tunisia, and it’s the perfect place to drop anchor for two days.

  • Beach & Water Sports: The hotel sits on a pristine private beach. The Beach Club is the place to be—think high-end loungers, chilled drinks, and direct access to the turquoise water.

  • Diving and Snorkeling: Tabarka is famous for its red coral. The hotel can arrange diving or snorkeling trips to the rocky inlets where the water is crystal clear and teeming with marine life.

  • Pools & Golf: If you've had enough salt water, lounge by one of the three outdoor pools or play a round on the 18-hole championship golf course that winds through the pine forest right up to the ocean’s edge.

Exploring the Harbor & Castle On Sunday afternoon, take the short 5-minute drive into the town of Tabarka.

  • The Genoese Castle: This 16th-century fortress sits on a wooded, rocky outpost overlooking the harbor. Built around 1540 by the Lomellini family from Genoa, Italy, it originally sat on its own island about 400 yards off the coast before being connected to the mainland. The Genoese controlled the fortress for centuries to protect their lucrative trade in the region's famous red coral. Today, it’s a bit of a climb up the pine-dotted path to reach the outer walls, but the 360-degree views of the red-roofed town, the bustling marina, and the deep blue Mediterranean are spectacular.

  • The Needles (Les Aiguilles): Check out these massive, jagged rock formations rising from the sea right near the coast. They are iconic to Tabarka and look best during the "golden hour" just before sunset.

Day 4: Monday – The Scenic Route Home

The Drive: Tabarka to Tunis (Approx. 110 miles / 3 hours)

After one last breakfast overlooking the sea, drive back to Tunis. If you have time, take the slower "P7" route for a portion of the drive to soak in the mountain views and forest air one last time before hitting the city.

Trip Essentials

  • Pack a Lunch & Snacks: This is my top tip for Bulla Regia! There are almost no food options at the site. Pack a cooler in Tunis with sandwiches, fruit, and plenty of water so you can have a picnic overlooking the ruins.

  • Car Rental: Essential. You want the freedom to stop for photos in the mountains.

  • Clothing: Bring a light jacket for the Tabarka evenings—the sea breeze can be surprisingly cool even in late spring.

  • Footwear: Wear sturdy walking shoes. Navigating the ancient stairs down into the villas at Bulla Regia requires good grip.

Ready to see a different side of Tunisia? The green hills and underground villas are waiting.

Did you know the "capers" we love in our food are actually the unopened flower buds of the Capparis spinosa plant? I spotted these beauties growing right out of the ancient stone walls here. If you let the bud bloom into that gorgeous white and purple flower, it eventually turns into a "caper berry"—the larger, crunchier version you often see on charcuterie boards.

Nature’s seasoning, found right on the trail!
