Setting Sail: Your Essential Guide to a Smooth Ferry Trip from Tunis, Tunisia to Sicily, Italy!

Dreaming of the azure waters of the Mediterranean, the historical charm of Tunisia, and the sun-kissed landscapes of Sicily? A ferry trip connecting these two beautiful destinations is an adventure in itself! But before you hoist the anchor, here are some tips and tricks to ensure your journey is as smooth as the calmest sea.

1. Booking Your Passage: Early Bird Gets the Best Cabin!

  • When to Book: Especially if you're traveling during peak season (summer months, holidays), book your tickets well in advance. Not only does this secure your spot, but you might also snag better prices.

  • Which Company?: The main operators for this route are usually Grimaldi Lines and GNV (Grandi Navi Veloci). We took Grimaldi Lines; while it was far from a luxury experience, it was comfortable enough. Since we stayed a week, the savings on a car rental were significant, making the 8-hour journey well worth it—plus, not having to worry about packing too much was fantastic.

  • Booking Extras: We paid for an exterior cabin to have a view. Most of the trip was just empty waves, but it’s nice if you don't want to feel cooped up. We also paid for the full meal package (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner). The food was pretty good—it is an Italian ferry line, after all—but the cafeteria gets very busy, so I recommend showing up a few minutes before opening. I also purchased the internet package.

  • Cabin vs. Deck: For an overnight journey, a cabin is highly recommended for comfort and privacy. You can opt for a cheaper interior cabin or an exterior one with a sea view. For a family, a cabin is the only way we would travel; you get a private bathroom and a bed, which is much better than a lounge chair for an 8-hour trip.

2. Preparing for Departure: Paperwork & Packing!

  • Documentation is Key: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months. You'll also need any necessary visas for Italy if you're not an EU citizen. Keep all travel documents in an easily accessible bag.

  • Currency: Have Euros ready for the cafeteria and shops. While cards are accepted, cash is a must if the ship's internet goes down.

  • Pack Smart:

    • Small Overnight Bag: Keep toiletries, clothes, medications, and a tablet in a small bag. Bring flip-flops or sandals; our cabin and the boat in general were not the cleanest.

    • Comfortable Clothes: The ferry is air-conditioned, so bring layers and walking shoes.

    • Snacks & Drinks: Meal times are set, and outside of those hours, only coffee and small snacks are available. Bringing your own evening snacks and water will come in handy.

    • Entertainment: The trip from Tunis to Palermo is about 8 hours, plus an hour at each port for loading. The Grimaldi internet speed wasn't great, so download movies or bring books and board games. We played a bunch of Uno!

    • Seasickness: Bring medication just in case. Our trip was smooth, but the weather can change quickly.

    • Power Bank: Our cabin had several outlets (European style, so bring adapters), but charging points are limited elsewhere on the ship.

REMEMBER YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GO TO YOUR CAR WHILE THE FERRY IS UNDERWAY!

3. At the Port: Arrive Early and Be Patient!

  • Tunis Port: The port of La Goulette is very busy. Arrive 3-4 hours before departure, especially with a vehicle.

  • Check-in Process: You’ll check in at the office for your boarding pass and cabin key, then proceed through immigration. The process is very confusing and slow, so take your time and be patient.

  • Parking & Loading: Pay close attention to staff instructions when loading your car. It can be chaotic!

4. On Board: Making the Most of Your Journey!

  • Explore the Ship: Our ferry offered cafeterias with decent meals, a coffee bar (which was always extremely busy), and outdoor decks perfect for the sea breeze and views of the coastline.

  • Stay Connected: I would pay for the Wi-Fi again just for messaging but definitely bring offline entertainment for everything else.

5. Arrival in Sicily: Welcome to Italia!

  • Morning Call: There is usually a wake-up announcement a couple of hours before arrival. Stay in your cabin as long as possible; once you leave, you’ll end up standing around for about an hour while the ferry docks.

  • Disembarkation: This takes some time, but the Italian port system is much smoother than Tunisia. Have your passport ready for immigration.

6. Places to Visit in Sicily!

  • Costa Saracena-Castelluccio: We stayed at an Airbnb here. It’s 30 minutes outside Catania but offers amazing views of the city and Mount Etna.

  • Mount Etna: You should absolutely drive to the volcano’s parking area for shops, restaurants, and trekking to the summit.

  • Gambino Vini: For an amazing wine tasting with views from the eastern slope of Etna.

  • Taormina: A stunning hilltop city where we visited the Teatro Antico di Taormina, which has breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.

  • Valley of the Temples: A massive archaeological site with many ruins and a museum.

  • Shopping: We visited the Sicilia Outlet Village, a large outdoor mall.

  • Palermo: The vibrant downtown is great for walking to historical sites and restaurants.

  • Naval Air Station Sigonella: Don't forget to check out the on-base commissary/PX store.

7. Departing from Sicily

  • I highly recommend staying in Palermo the night before departure. We stayed at a hotel a few minutes from the port; I was able to walk over and check in early, which saved us from waiting in the car later that day.

  • Departing Sicily is much more straightforward than departing Tunisia!

Final Thoughts

Traveling from Tunis to Sicily by ferry is a unique experience that combines the adventure of the open sea with the practical benefit of having your own car to explore the island. While the ports can be a bit chaotic and the journey takes some patience, the freedom you have once you drive off the ramp in Palermo makes every minute worth it. From the heights of Mount Etna to the ancient streets of Taormina, Sicily is waiting for you—so pack your bags, grab your Uno cards, and get ready for an unforgettable Mediterranean crossing!
